Marilyn's Tree, 2011
Acrylic on paper
40" x 60"

This painting is named for a friend I have known since grammar school. Our lives had many parallels, differing only in our means of artistic expression: Marilyn's was music, mine is painting. Her sudden, totally unexpected death was wrenching. It also brought anew the realization we should not postpone what is personally important. So I retrieved an Arches sheet of paper that I have saved for 21 years and started painting Marilyn. Rather than a conventional portrait, I used a tree to represent her strength of character, her many interests and talents, her spirit of independence, her love of finding beauty in music, goodness in people and joy in ideas. She is missed.
